How Native Android Apps Are Enabling Usage-Based Insurance Through Driver Scoring

The Story

An InsurTech provider wanted to offer usage-based insurance, where premiums reflect how policyholders actually drive. To make this possible, the client needed a reliable way to capture real driving behavior from policyholders' smartphones and convert it into fair, consistent driver scores.

InnovationM helped address this challenge through Android app development services, building a native driver-scoring app that detects trips automatically, processes GPS, accelerometer, and gyroscope data, and turns driving events into consistent scores. This enabled the insurer to launch pay-as-you-drive programs backed by real trip-level data, while giving policyholders a clear, low-friction view of their own driving behavior.

The Challenge

Traditional insurance pricing relied on static factors such as age, vehicle type, and claims history. The client needed continuous, trip-level driving data to support a pay-as-you-drive model, collected without adding friction for policyholders.

The existing approach made it difficult to:

  • Capture real driving behavior rather than relying on static risk factors.
  • Detect trips automatically without requiring policyholders to start or stop recording.
  • Collect sensor data accurately across a wide range of Android devices.
  • Run continuous data collection without draining battery or consuming excessive data.
  • Translate raw sensor readings into clear, consistent driver scores.
  • Give policyholders visibility into their driving and how to improve it.
  • Protect sensitive location and behavioral data throughout collection and transfer.

From a technical perspective, the app needed to run reliably in the background, process GPS, accelerometer, and gyroscope data, and detect events such as harsh braking, rapid acceleration, speeding, and phone use while driving. It also had to work within Android's background execution and battery optimization limits, across devices from many manufacturers.

The Solution

InnovationM developed a native Android driver-scoring app in Kotlin that captures trip data automatically, evaluates driving behavior, and shares scores with both policyholders and the insurer's systems. The solution included:

  • Automatic trip detection: Starting and ending trip recording automatically using activity recognition and motion signals, with no manual input from policyholders.
  • Sensor data collection: Capturing GPS, accelerometer, and gyroscope data to measure speed, braking, acceleration, cornering, and route patterns.
  • Driving event detection: Identifying harsh braking, rapid acceleration, sharp cornering, speeding, and phone distraction during trips.
  • Driver scoring engine: Converting trip events into consistent driver scores that the insurer can use for usage-based pricing.
  • Battery & data optimization: Designing background services and batching logic that work within Android's power-management rules while limiting battery and data usage.
  • Policyholder dashboard: Showing trip history, scores, and driving insights so policyholders can understand and improve their behavior.
  • Secure data handling: Encrypting location and trip data on the device and in transit, with consent and privacy controls built into the app.
  • Backend integration: Connecting the app to the insurer's policy, pricing, and analytics platforms through secure APIs.

The key focus was not simply building a tracking app, but creating a dependable driving-data capability that policyholders would keep using and the insurer could trust for pricing decisions.

The Impact

The implementation helped the client move from static, profile-based pricing toward insurance programs based on actual driving behavior. Policyholders gained a clear view of their driving, and the insurer gained trip-level data to support fairer pricing. The solution supported:

  • Launch of pay-as-you-drive insurance programs.
  • Automatic, low-friction trip recording for policyholders.
  • Consistent driver scores based on real driving events.
  • Greater policyholder engagement through feedback on driving habits.
  • Reliable data collection across a wide range of Android devices.
  • Secure, consent-based handling of location and behavioral data.
  • A foundation for rewards, safe-driving incentives, and broader telematics products.

By bringing together native Android development, sensor data processing, driver scoring, and enterprise integration, InnovationM helped the client turn smartphones into a practical foundation for usage-based insurance.

The challenge was not simply collecting location data. It was capturing accurate driving behavior in the background, across many devices, without draining batteries or frustrating policyholders. By combining automatic trip detection, careful power management, and a consistent scoring engine, our team built an Android app the insurer could rely on for usage-based pricing.
